The Battle for the Blue: SM Cares’ Coastal Cleanups Turn the Tide on Plastic

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Beyond the bustling corridors of commerce and the bright lights of the city, a quiet but fierce battle is being fought on the Philippines' shorelines. In a powerful demonstration of environmental stewardship, SM Supermalls, through its corporate social responsibility arm SM Cares, recently mobilized a massive nationwide effort to protect our most precious resource. This wasn't just a cleanup; it was a rallying cry for a Waste-Free Future.

A Nationwide Movement for World Water Day

In celebration of World Water Day, the spirit of bayanihan—community unity—was on full display. Seven participating malls across six strategic locations became the frontlines for this environmental intervention:

SM City La Union

SM City Urdaneta Central

SM City Tanza

SM City Daet

SM City Consolacion

SM Seaside City Cebu

SM J Mall

From the northern coast of La Union to the heart of Cebu, volunteers and local stakeholders united with a singular, high-stakes goal: to divert waste away from the oceans and restore the health of local marine ecosystems.

More Than Trash: The Power of Education

While the physical removal of debris is vital, SM Cares is looking toward a permanent solution. This year’s initiative prioritized enhanced waste segregation education. It isn't enough to simply pick up plastic; the community must understand the why and the how of proper sorting and recycling.

"Protecting our coastal and marine environments requires a more proactive, end-to-end approach with the cleanups starting with education, deepening awareness, and sustaining collective action," says Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director for Environment and Sustainability of SM Supermalls.

During the event, participants didn't just bag trash—they analyzed it. By sorting materials like plastic packaging and beverage containers, volunteers witnessed firsthand the devastating impact that improperly managed daily waste has on marine life.

A Year-Round Commitment to the Planet

The coastal cleanups are a cornerstone of the broader SM Green Movement. This isn't a one-day event, but a sustained mission to inspire long-term behavioral change among Filipinos. To keep the momentum alive, SM Cares has already set its sights on the next horizons:

June: World Oceans Day Cleanup Drives

September: International Coastal Cleanup activities

November: National Environmental Awareness Month initiatives

By turning community action into a hands-on lesson, SM Supermalls is proving that the path to a cleaner world starts at our own feet. It is a journey from awareness to action, all for the benefit of the people and the planet.

The Future of Waste is Here: SM Supermalls and Sparklo Ignite a Recycling Revolution

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The landscape of environmental sustainability in the Philippines has just shifted. In a groundbreaking move that bridges cutting-edge technology with community action, SM Supermalls has officially joined forces with the global cleantech titan Sparklo. This isn’t just a corporate partnership; it is the dawn of a new era where protecting the planet is as effortless and rewarding as a trip to your favorite mall.

A First for the Philippines: The Rise of the "Reverse Vending Machine"

For the first time ever, Sparklo’s innovative reverse vending machine technology has landed on Philippine shores. These sleek, high-tech machines are transforming the way Filipinos view waste. Instead of discarding plastic bottles and cans into overflowing bins, mallgoers can now feed them into these intelligent collectors that sort and process them for a second life.

“When we help make recycling accessible and rewarding, taking steps to protect the environment... becomes as easy as stepping into your most-loved SM Supermall,” says Steven Tan, SM Supermalls President.

Turning Plastic into Purpose

This initiative, an expansion of the SM Green Movement and the SM Green Recycling Machine (GRM) program, is designed to dismantle the barriers to sustainable living. By placing these machines in high-traffic areas, SM is turning everyday mall visits into meaningful acts of environmental responsibility.

The impact is tangible:

Landfill Diversion: The program actively pulls plastic away from landfills, ensuring it is properly processed and recycled.

Rewarding Habits: The technology makes recycling a fun, engaging, and rewarding experience for customers, encouraging long-term sustainable lifestyle changes.

Waste-Free Vision: This collaboration reinforces SM Prime Holdings’ unwavering commitment to a waste-free future.

Where to Find the Revolution

The first wave of the rollout is already live. Currently, 10 SM Green Recycling Machines are deployed at these premier locations:

Luzon Locations Visayas & Mindanao

SM Mall of Asia SM Seaside City Cebu

SM Megamall SM Lanang

SM North Edsa

SM Aura

The Podium

S Maison

SM Southmall

SM City San Lazaro

But this is only the beginning. The partnership is set to scale rapidly, with a planned rollout of 30 additional machines across the Philippines to ensure no community is left behind in this green transition.

Empowering a Greener Tomorrow

Through SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, this program aims to empower communities toward long-lasting improvement. By combining Sparklo’s innovative tech with the massive reach of SM’s 89 malls, the "Waste-Free Future" campaign is moving from a concept to a nationwide reality.

As Sparklo Country Manager Ellen Quilas notes, this partnership is about more than just machines—it’s about strengthening the country’s entire recycling ecosystem. One bottle at a time, SM and Sparklo are proving that technology and community participation are the ultimate keys to a cleaner, more sustainable Philippines.
