Angara orders nationwide teacher orientation ahead of major policy shifts for SY 2026–2027

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

MAKATI CITY, 24 April 2026 — Heads of public schools across the country have begun orientation sessions as the Department of Education (DepEd) intensifies a nationwide effort to prepare schools for key teaching and learning reforms set for School Year 2026–2027.

The orientations, which start on April 24, aim to ensure that school heads are fully equipped to strengthen leadership readiness and management of the new academic protocols.

Regional and division planning conferences held earlier this month set the groundwork, followed by cluster-based orientations for school heads until the end of the month. Full orientations for teachers and school heads are scheduled from May 2 to 15.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the early start of orientations signals a more deliberate approach to reform implementation.

“Hindi puwedeng papel lang ang pagbabago. Kailangan ramdam ito sa bawat classroom,” he said. “We are making sure our school heads and teachers understand not just the ‘what,’ but the ‘why’ and the ‘how.’”

At the same time, Angara issued a clear directive to school heads to protect teachers from additional workload as reforms are rolled out.

“Habang pinapadali natin ang sistema, hindi puwedeng dinadagdagan ang trabaho ng guro. No unnecessary reports, no extra tasks that take teachers away from teaching,” he added.

Senior DepEd officials are personally leading the conduct of these orientations to ensure the direct and accurate delivery of policy updates across the regions.

To ensure maximum reach and flexibility, DepEd said these sessions may be conducted face-to-face, online, or through self-paced materials such as websites and video kits.

The department is also providing necessary resources, including materials and resource persons, to maintain high-quality training management support.

The orientations cover adjustments in how the academic year is structured under the three-term school calendar policy. This includes the introduction of an opening block at the start of classes dedicated to baseline assessments, school diagnostics, and early-year programs such as feeding initiatives.

This approach is meant to clear administrative and preparatory tasks before formal lessons begin, allowing teachers and learners to focus on instruction once classes are fully underway.

Meanwhile, Undersecretary for Learning Systems Strand Carmela Oracion clarified that the reorganization of the school calendar will not add new costs for families.

“The total number of school days remains the same. What we are changing is how time is used,” Oracion said, adding that expenses at the start of the school year will remain limited to usual needs such as uniforms, supplies, and daily allowances.

DepEd also underscored that part of the reform is easing the administrative burden on teachers, with school heads expected to streamline school-level requirements and align with national efforts to simplify workload.

Furthermore, the orientations will also cover related reforms on revised guidelines for classroom assessment and grading, lesson planning, flexible learning programs, updated protocols for learning continuity during emergencies, strengthened Senior High School curriculum and work immersion.

These strategic adjustments are specifically geared toward improving learning outcomes by providing a more stable and focused environment for both learners and teachers.

A New Chapter for Knowledge: Ateneo Journals Find a Home in the Manila City Library

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In a powerful move to dismantle the "ivory tower" of academia, the Ateneo de Manila University has officially partnered with the Manila City Library to bring high-level scholarly research directly to the heart of the public. This landmark initiative transforms how knowledge is shared, ensuring that groundbreaking literature and research journals are no longer confined to university walls but are accessible to every curious mind in the city.

Breaking the Barriers of Learning

The collaboration began with initial discussions between the Ateneo de Manila Press and the city library, fueled by a shared commitment to inclusive education. By placing these works in a public space, the university is actively breaking down the barriers that often keep academic dialogue isolated from the communities it aims to serve.

"The library plays a vital role in connecting communities to knowledge and fostering informed dialogue."

A Wealth of Wisdom

The first wave of this initiative is nothing short of impressive: close to a hundred journal copies spanning a vast array of disciplines. The collection includes:

Diverse Disciplines: Humanities, cultural studies, social sciences, and sustainability.

Key Titles: Notable publications such as Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia, Budhi: A Journal of Ideas of Culture, and Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints.

Global Impact: Research that bridges local insights with global contexts, curated for both academic specialists and general readers.

This collection represents a broad spectrum of work, from evocative poetry and fiction to rigorous academic journals.

A Call to Collaboration

This turnover is just the beginning of a larger effort to foster a more informed and engaged public. As these journals find their new home, they stand as a testament to the power of institutional partnerships in creating lifelong learning opportunities for all.

A Feast for the World: The 18th Philippine Food Expo Ignites a Global Culinary Revolution

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The World Trade Center Metro Manila was recently transformed into a high-octane epicenter of innovation, heritage, and flavor as the 18th Philippine Food Expo (PFE) swept through the city from April 17-19, 2026. Under the evocative theme, "Feast of Philippine Flavors to the World," the event didn't just showcase food—it cemented the Philippines' position as a formidable power on the global culinary stage.

With a staggering turnout of over 26,000 visitors, the three-day extravaganza became a whirlwind of business activity and cultural pride. Spearheaded by PHILFOODEX Inc. and managed by Cut Unlimited Inc, the expo served as a massive launchpad for over 300 MSMEs representing the artisanal craftsmanship of the entire Philippine archipelago.

Economic Impact: A Billion-Peso Success

The stakes were high, and the results were even higher. The expo shattered expectations by generating an estimated PhP 1,070,775,000.00 in combined booked and indicative sales. This massive economic surge was fueled by an expanded exhibition floor that, for the first time, included dedicated International Pavilions from India and Malaysia, fostering unprecedented cross-border collaboration.

The grand opening was a true "who’s who" of industry leadership, featuring a ceremonial ribbon-cutting led by:

Hon. Ma. Cristina A. Roque, Secretary of the DTI.

Mr. Ruben L. See, President of PHILFOODEX.

Usec. Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero (DA) and Usec. Verna C. Buensuceso (DOT).

Distinguished directors and representatives from PHILEXPORT, the City of Pasay, and various academic institutions.

The Heat of the Kitchen: Culinary Icons and Rising Stars

The air was thick with the aroma of innovation as the PFE stage hosted a "Battle Royale" of culinary talent.

The Masters: Celebrity chefs, including the "Lumpia Queen" Abi Marquez, Gerick Manalo, and Chris Carangian, captivated audiences with live demos that "reimagined Filipino classics for the global table".

The Flair: In a breathtaking display of technical precision and showmanship, Mr. Joe Mari Castillo emerged as the champion of the Flair Battle Philippines. He now prepares to carry the Philippine flag to the International Bartending Competition in Thailand this July.

The Next Generation: The Culinary Challenges

The future of Filipino gastronomy was on full display as students from 45 schools nationwide competed for glory. In a dramatic finale, Holy Angel University was crowned the overall Culinary Challenge Champion.
