The crisis unfolded when Askri’s father suffered a sudden and critical medical emergency. Operating on pure adrenaline and instinct, Askri immediately dialed 911—the country’s designated national emergency lifeline, meant to be a beacon of immediate rescue in moments of absolute peril.


Instead of an urgent response, he was met with deafening silence.


“Halos 10 minutes na akong tumatawag sa 911 pero wala pa ring sumasagot,” Askri recounted in his viral post, capturing the helpless panic of watching a loved one deteriorate while holding a dead phone line.


When a dispatcher finally broke the silence, the relief was instantaneous—only to be shattered by immediate betrayal. Rather than taking command of a life-or-death situation, the dispatcher repeatedly instructed him to “wait.” Worse still, cutting through the receiver came the unmistakable sound of chatter and laughter—a harrowing soundtrack of casual indifference while a human life hung in the balance.

Yet, looking across the globe reveals that this grim narrative is not an inescapable destiny. Two decades ago, another rising economic powerhouse was facing an identical nightmare. Today, that very same nation has flipped the script, turning its garbage crisis into a multi-billion-dollar engine of clean energy.


The lesson is as profound as it is urgent: Waste is only waste if you waste it.


The Anatomy of a Crisis: When Cities Drown in Their Own Making

Back in the early 2000s, rapid industrialization and an unprecedented migration of hundreds of millions of people into urban centers created an unprecedented side effect: literal mountains of trash. Landfills overflowed past their breaking points. City rivers and lakes turned toxic, and public health alarms sounded across major metropolitan areas.

The most notorious are Dioxins and Furans, which are persistent organic pollutants known to be carcinogenic even in minute quantities. They bioaccumulate in the food chain and are linked to developmental issues, immune system damage, and reproductive harm.


Heavy Metals: Incinerators release heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic into the air. These are potent neurotoxins and carcinogens that settle into the soil and water, eventually impacting human health.

This creates a perverse incentive to generate waste and discourages cities and industries from prioritizing waste reduction, reuse, and high-value recycling programs.


Burning Valuable Resources: Materials that could be recycled or composted—such as paper, cardboard, and food waste—are instead being burned for a one-time energy gain. This destroys the embedded energy used to create those products in the first place and requires extracting new raw materials to replace them, which is far more energy-intensive than recycling the existing ones.


Climate Contradiction: While some plastics are derived from fossil fuels, burning them in an incinerator releases their carbon content directly into the atmosphere as CO2, often at a higher rate than burning coal. This makes WtE facilities significant contributors to climate change.
