But they are only human, after all.  if you review the Corona trial, you'd find moments where even Miriam Defensor Santiago and Joker Arroyo were guilty of such stoutness.


But if you're Joker, a former human rights lawyer going against Francisco Tatad, the Marcos Information Minister who read the declaration of martial law on television, then by all means you should be on destroy mode and double down. 


Look, the Constitution never said that only members of the bar are qualified to sit in judgment. It said, senators, period. The office belongs equally to the lawyer, the doctor, the economist, the soldier, the educator, the journalist, the actor, or whoever the people choose to elect, however painful they may be to the rest of us. 


Of course, legal training is an advantage. It can help in distinguishing arguments from clever wordplay, but it is hardly a guarantee of wisdom. 


History is littered with brilliant lawyers who defended the truly morally repugnant, and with non-lawyers who displayed extraordinary moral clarity. 


Lawyers are the species that would argue against the hero worship of Rizal because we were not present on the day of his execution, or that absent video authentication, Marcos might not have declared martial law in 1972. 


The greater shame, in fact, is not ignorance of the law; it is the pretense to a monopoly on sound judgment. If the law alone were enough, there would be no need for a senate at all. 


Tito Soto, knowing that brevity is the soul of win, countered Cayetano the other day with this succinct mic drop manifestation before moving not to strike out his colleague's condescending statement from the record, so that future generations may be aware that there are always assholes and jerks in the upper chamber,

Dear staff. 


This is not a letter about politics; it is a plea about occupational safety. Your principal is a man of remarkable confidence, but confidence is like methane or methane gas.


It requires requires careful management. Left unattended, it escapes into microphones and seeps into the natural conversation in the most unflattering of ways. 


You occupy a role more important than merely arranging schedules and carrying holders, you are the last line of defense between an impulsive thought and the congressional record. 


Somewhere between the senator's brain and the nearest microphone or TV camera, there ought to be a checkpoint, like a customs inspection, or a quarantine station, or border patrol. 


Somewhere in your team, a brave soul should be in, must be empowered to whisper, "Sir, wait, before pointing to a framed poster of what resembles the four-way test for the good senator who has no shortage in self-esteem, 


Number one question: Is it necessary to open your mouth at this point? 

Number two question: Really, like a matter of national security? 

Number three: Can it wait till tomorrow? 

Number four, will it make me look and sound stupid? 


Every public official occasionally misspeaks. That is a clear hazard of the trade. The tragedy is that public ridicule is cumulative. One unfortunate remark can be forgiven. A dozen becomes a reputation that is unfair to the office, unfair to the institution, and ultimately unfair even to the man himself.


Eventually, the audience stops listening for ideas and starts waiting for the next blooper, like asking the prosecution to avoid being one-sided, or that, or previous to that, that Force Majeure thingy, and before that, the claim of a husband's sexual rights to the wife, regardless of mood. 


When a counsel for the defense says that you're sorry, counsel for the prosecution says that your principal adds color to the proceedings. Please do not mistake it for praise. Adding color is the job of class clowns and fast food mascots. 


Your principal, your principal has been senator since 2022, and four years plus millions of pesos and budgets in the office should be an adequate time for self-improvement. 


There's an old saying, often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, though its authorship is uncertain, that it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt. 


Dear staff, you have the duty to protect his image and credibility. Tell him when he is venturing outside his expertise. Hand him briefing papers. Encourage him to ask questions before answering them. Introduce him to that ancient political technology known as preparation. It has served statesmen rather well for centuries, and if all else fails, just take a look at the great little Latin and embrace the oldest communications strategy in human civilization.
