Beneath the Alpine Snow: ‘Enjoy Your Stay’ Brings a Stark, Global Reality to Cinemalaya 22

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The pristine, snow-dusted peaks of the Swiss Alps are synonymous with luxury, leisure, and the kind of serenity that money buys. But this year, the 22nd Cinemalaya Filipino Independent Film Festival is set to shatter that polished veneer.

On August 6, 2026, the festival kicks off with the Philippine premiere of Enjoy Your Stay, a gripping drama that transports audiences from the warmth of Manila to the chilling isolation of a high-end European ski resort. Produced by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) in collaboration with Belgium’s Be For Films, the movie arrives on local shores riding a wave of international acclaim following its standout debut at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival.

A Mirror to the Migrant Experience

At the heart of the film is Luz, an undocumented Filipina worker whose life is defined by the stark contrast between the lives she facilitates and the precariousness of her own. Directed by Dominik Locher with a razor-sharp screenplay by Honeylyn Joy Alipio, the narrative dives deep into the unseen gears of the tourism industry. It is a story not just of survival, but of the quiet, often invisible sacrifices made by millions of Filipinos working far from home.

The film serves as the perfect centerpiece for Cinemalaya 22: Reel Reflections, a theme dedicated to cinema as a profound lens into the human condition. By pulling back the curtain on the complexities of economic inequality and the migrant labor struggle, Enjoy Your Stay forces us to confront the human stories tucked away in the corners of the world’s most exclusive destinations.

A World-Class Performance

If the plot is the hook, Mercedes Cabral is the soul of the film. Known for her career-defining work with director Brillante Mendoza in Serbis and Kinatay, Cabral delivers a performance that has already left international critics breathless.

FDCP Chairman and CEO Jose Javier Reyes, who witnessed the film’s reception in Berlin, described the experience of seeing a global audience rise in ovation for a Filipina lead as nothing short of electric. "To witness a primarily international audience burst in applause in unquestionable affirmation of the talent of the Filipina... leaves one stunned," Reyes noted. He emphasized that the film is a testament to the fact that when provided the right platform, Filipino artists are unequivocally world-class.

Be Part of the Conversation

The Philippine premiere is a milestone moment for local cinema. Alongside Cabral, the film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Anna Luna, Irma Adlawan, Donna Cariaga, Hasmine Kilip, and Madeleine Nicolas, supported by a talented group of international performers.

The film is set to open the festival on August 6, 2026, at 7:30 PM, hosted at Red Carpet Cinemas 1 & 2, Shangri-La Plaza. In a rare opportunity for local cinephiles, admission to this opening night screening is free.

Following its festival debut, the film will continue its journey through FDCP Presents: A Curation of World Cinema, ensuring that this powerful exploration of the Filipino experience reaches audiences across the country.

For those ready to witness a performance that challenges the status quo and a story that demands to be heard, mark your calendars. This is more than a movie; it is a reflection of a globalized world, told through the eyes of those who keep it running.
