But today, a quiet crisis is unfolding beneath the canopy. As climate change tightens its grip, these delicate fruits are facing an existential threat that is leaving farmers counting their losses and the future of an iconic crop in jeopardy.


A Crop on the Edge

Lychee is not a fruit that tolerates compromise. It is a temperamental treasure, requiring precise environmental conditions to thrive. Zahid Khan, a local orchard owner, describes the crop with a mixture of reverence and anxiety. "Lychee is an extremely sensitive crop," he explains.


For the farmers of Tangi, the predictability of the seasons has vanished. In its place are sudden, violent shifts: untimed rains that bruise the fruit, and scorching heat waves that arrive during the most critical stages of flowering and fruiting. When the water supply runs dry just as the trees demand hydration, the impact on production is catastrophic.


The Clockwork Crisis

The struggle does not end at the harvest. Because the fruit is extraordinarily perishable, the moment it is plucked from the branch, a desperate race against the clock begins.


"The trade is profitable, but the fruit can withstand neither excessive heat nor rain," says Jahangir Khan, a seasoned trader. "Fruit picked just a day earlier can start spoiling within hours."


In the sweltering heat of a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa summer, a single hour of delay can transform a premium product into a degraded commodity. The price disparity is stark and devastating: fresh, high-quality lychees can command up to 1,000 rupees per kilogram, but fruit that has succumbed to the heat—dried out, discolored, and unappealing—often sells for a mere 300 to 400 rupees. For the farmers, these heat-related losses are not just statistics; they are a direct and painful drain on their livelihoods.


A Plea for Preservation

Amidst this encroaching uncertainty, a singular, clear solution has emerged from the orchards of Charsadda. Traders and growers are united in an urgent appeal to the government: the establishment of cold storage facilities within the district.


The implications of such an investment would be transformative:


Shelf-Life Extension: Proper cold storage could preserve the fruit for up to a month, effectively ending the frantic, high-stakes race to the market.


Economic Stability: By reducing spoilage, farmers can maintain consistent prices and protect their income.


Market Reach: A longer harvest window would allow the fruit to reach consumers for a greater period, potentially expanding trade opportunities.


Revenue Growth: A more stable, sustainable supply chain would ultimately generate more consistent tax revenue for the state.


For the families who have tended these orchards for generations, the cost of building these facilities is an insurmountable barrier. They possess the land, the expertise, and the will to continue, but they lack the infrastructure to fight a changing climate.


The crimson fruit of Tangi remains a symbol of the region’s agricultural heritage. Yet, without intervention, this sweet legacy faces a bitter end. The question remains: will the support arrive in time to save Charsadda’s harvest, or will the heat finally prove too much to overcome?

But a new, invisible crisis is invading our bedrooms, turning the night into an extension of the stifling heat that plagues our days.


Across the globe, the air is refusing to cool down. And as temperatures rise, the profound, quiet rhythm of human life is breaking.


A groundbreaking new report from Climate Central has pulled back the curtain on a burgeoning public health emergency: climate-induced sleep deprivation. While we often associate climate change with headlines about floods or droughts, the most insidious damage may be occurring while we are unconscious.


The Math of Exhaustion

The numbers are staggering. Between 2020 and 2025, the average person lost nearly 56 hours of sleep each year due to the relentless heat of the night. That is seven full nights of rest stolen from every person on Earth.


While some of this loss is due to general warming trends, climate change—driven by human activity—is responsible for more than 10 percent of that deficit. In over 1,300 cities analyzed globally, the amount of sleep lost due to climate-changed temperatures has at least doubled since the early 1970s.


"The analysis reveals how climate change is translating into measurable hours of lost sleep," explains Kristina Dahl, Climate Central’s vice-president for science. "The impacts of fossil fuel-driven warming extend beyond extreme weather to undermine one of the most fundamental requirements for human health."


India: A Nation Wakeful and Weary

In India, the situation has moved beyond a mere trend into a regional crisis. The country now stands as one of the world's most significant hotspots for heat-induced sleep loss. Residents in the southern parts of the country are suffering, losing between 78 and 91 hours of sleep annually.


Tamil Nadu has emerged at the epicenter of this exhaustion, recording the highest climate-driven sleep loss in the nation, with residents losing an additional 7.9 hours per year specifically linked to the warming climate.


The struggle is visceral in India’s major urban centers. Chennai residents are facing a staggering 93 hours of total heat-related sleep loss annually. Mumbai follows closely with 84 hours, and Kolkata with 80. Even in the relatively cooler climes of Bengaluru, the "climate change signal" is stark, with the city recording eight hours of sleep loss per year directly attributable to global warming.


The Heavy Toll of the "Hidden Crisis"

Why does this matter? Because sleep is not a luxury; it is the physiological foundation upon which our lives are built.


Dr. Courtney Howard, an emergency physician and President-Elect of the Canadian Medical Association, warns that the consequences of this trend are grave. "Sleeping less than seven hours per night is associated with impaired immune function and performance, and increased errors, pain, and accidents," she notes.


When we are robbed of sleep, our bodies pay the price. The long-term medical outlook includes increased risks of weight gain, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, the report highlights that the burden is not shared equally: older adults, women, and those in lower-income communities are finding themselves disproportionately vulnerable to these rising nighttime temperatures.

As climate change drives more frequent and intense hot nights, we are witnessing the erosion of a basic human necessity. Productivity is plummeting, mental health is fraying, and our physical resilience is being worn thin—one sleepless night at a time.


The data is clear: the heat is no longer just an issue for the afternoon. It has followed us into our homes and into our beds. As we continue to navigate a world of shifting weather patterns, the battle for a good night’s sleep has become a frontline in the fight for our long-term health. The question now is not just how we will adapt to the heat of the day, but whether we can reclaim the safety and stillness of the night.

China continues to carry 58 percent of the world’s coal consumption, and across the continent, countries are occasionally turning back to coal-fired power to shield themselves from supply shortages. It is the great paradox of the 2026 energy landscape: the region leading the revolution is simultaneously tasked with the most difficult climb to shed its carbon dependency.


A Global Momentum

Beyond the borders of Asia, the momentum is undeniably accelerating. Global green revenues grew by 5.3 percent in 2025, marking the fastest expansion since 2022. The market’s appetite for change is clearly visible, with electric vehicles and advanced battery storage leading the charge.

The report from the LSEG serves as both a celebration and a warning. As the world breaches the US$10 trillion mark, the challenge shifts from start-up to scale-up.

The coming years will demand a delicate, high-stakes balancing act: how to satisfy the voracious energy demands of industrial competition while ensuring total systemic decarbonization. Asia’s leadership role now forces it to answer the most pressing question of our time: can a region build a green empire while still dismantling its own reliance on the old world’s fuels?


The answer to that question will define the remainder of the century. For now, one thing is certain: the green economy has moved from the periphery of finance to the very center of global power.
