Consumer Safety Alert: Viral Food-Like Squeezy Dumpling Toys May Pose Chemical Hazards

Toxics watchdog BAN Toxics issued a consumer alert over trendy, food-like squeezy dumpling toys that have recently gained widespread popularity after going viral online. Resembling steamed buns, these products are readily available in retail stores and online shopping platforms. Available in various sizes and colors, with some variants containing shiny glitter, the toys are sold at prices ranging from ₱65 to ₱120 in retail stores and ₱55 to ₱155 on online shopping sites.



Last June, the UK Government issued a product recall for squeezy dumpling toys due to excessive concentrations of benzene, posing a serious chemical risk to children’s health and safety.



Citing the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards, “The product presents a serious chemical risk because the outer layer contains an excessive concentration of benzene (20 mg/kg). If inhaled, benzene can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. Exposure to large amounts may also cause a burning sensation in the digestive tract and skin irritation.”



According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Human exposure to benzene has been associated with a range of acute and long-term adverse health effects and diseases, including cancer and haematological effects. Exposure can occur occupationally, in the general environment, and in the home as a result of the widespread use of benzene-containing petroleum products.”



“Children tend to put toys in their mouths. Food-like squeezy dumpling toys may appear harmless and playful, yet they may contain chemicals that pose risks to a child's health and development. These products also violate existing toy safety standards in the country,” said Thony Dizon, Advocacy and Campaign Officer of BAN Toxics.



Republic Act No. 10620, also known as the Toy and Game Safety Labeling Act of 2013, provides that all toys and games, whether locally manufactured or imported, distributed, donated, or sold in the Philippines, must comply with the applicable safety labeling and manufacturer’s marking requirements under the Philippine National Standards (PNS) for toy safety.




The Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of RA 10620 designate the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as the primary regulatory agencies responsible for implementing the law. The FDA, with the assistance of the DTI, shall lead the inspection, monitoring, surveillance of establishments, and collection of product samples, in coordination with other concerned government agencies, to determine compliance with the Act and its IRR.



Administrative actions for violations of this Act and its IRR shall be subject to the provisions of RA No. 9711, otherwise known as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Act of 2009. Covered products found to be in violation shall be seized or confiscated in favor of the government and disposed of in accordance with the pertinent laws and regulations.



BAN Toxics urges the FDA, DTI, and Local Government Units (LGUs) to conduct post-marketing surveillance, confiscation operations, issue public health advisories, and implement appropriate enforcement measures such as product recalls, to remove food-like squeezy dumpling toys from the market and ensure that only safe toys are made available to consumers.



To promote children’s safety, BAN Toxics also reminds parents and consumers to make informed purchasing decisions by observing the following:

Always read the product information and check for the required labeling.
Choose toys that are appropriate for your child’s age and developmental abilities.
Avoid purchasing toys with strong odors or those may contain harmful chemicals in their colors, materials, or components.
Verify Toys and Childcare Articles (TCCAs) through the FDA Verification Portal to check for relevant public health advisories at https://verification.fda.gov.ph.

When amplified by cyclical climate anomalies like El NiƱo, this haze transforms from an environmental nuisance into a full-scale public health emergency. Yet, despite its devastating toll on human lives, economies, and ecosystems, the crisis remains critically underreported in mainstream media.


The Anatomy of the Haze: Science Meets Climate

To understand the crisis, one must examine the dangerous convergence of human activity and extreme weather patterns.


The Fuel: Transboundary air pollution is largely driven by agricultural burning, forest fires, rapid industrialization, and vehicular emissions. In Southeast Asia, slash-and-burn clearing of carbon-rich peatlands releases monumental quantities of particulate matter (PM 2.5). In South Asia, seasonal crop residue burning compounds relentless urban emissions.


The Catalyst: Enter El NiƱo. This recurring climate phenomenon brings prolonged droughts and elevated temperatures to large parts of Asia. Respiratory and Cardiovascular Crises: Spikes in haze correlate directly with soaring hospital admissions for acute asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart attacks, and strokes.


Vulnerable Populations: Children, the elderly, outdoor workers, and low-income communities bear the heaviest burden, facing lifelong health deficits and diminished quality of life.


Systemic Strain: Healthcare systems buckle under sudden surges of patients gasping for air, disrupting routine medical care and straining national economies.

Tackling transboundary air pollution requires reimagining environmental governance through cross-border diplomacy, transparent data-sharing, and stringent enforcement of anti-burning laws.

When the Night Refuses to Cool: The Hidden Health Crisis Robbing Us of Sleep

Climate change has long worn a familiar face: the howling fury of stronger typhoons, the sudden devastation of floods, and the merciless glare of searing daytime temperatures. But as the sun sets, a more insidious threat is taking root in the shadows.


Scientists are sounding the alarm over a silent emergency: rising nighttime temperatures that are quietly robbing millions of people of sleep—the body's most essential biological shield.


A groundbreaking analysis by Climate Central reveals a staggering toll. Between 2020 and 2025, the average person worldwide lost more than 50 hours of sleep each year simply because climate change pushed nighttime temperatures to unnatural highs.


Unlike daytime heat, which demands endurance, nighttime is meant to offer sanctuary. It is supposed to provide the body with a critical window to cool down, repair, and reset. But that window is rapidly shrinking. Across Southeast Asia, climate change has added at least 40 nights a year where minimum temperatures stubbornly refuse to drop below 25 degrees Celsius, creating sweltering, restless conditions that defy rest.


The Concrete Trap: Why Nights Are No Longer Cooling Down

In densely built urban landscapes like Metro Manila, the danger does not fade with the twilight. Concrete roads, towering glass structures, and sprawling asphalt act as thermal sponges, soaking up relentless heat all day long.


After sunset, instead of releasing that energy into the cool night air, these materials slowly bleed stored heat back into the environment—a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect.


This trapped heat is further compounded by atmospheric physics. Dr. Rosa Perez, a fellow at the Manila Observatory and the National Resilience Council, explains that greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane possess loose molecular structures. These gaps trap outgoing thermal radiation, locking heat inside the lower atmosphere. When combined with cloudy skies that block heat from escaping into space, cities become permanent heat traps.


The Greenpeace Philippines report, "Here Comes the Sun," highlights how these conditions prevent nighttime from serving as the vital "thermal break" human bodies desperately need after prolonged daytime exposure.


"What is alarming is that the body is losing one of its most effective recovery mechanisms," says Jefferson Chua, campaigner for Greenpeace Philippines. "We know that sleep is the single best recovery mechanism for the body. So if you take that out, you're taking away the resilience aspect of the human body."


The High Cost of Sleeplessness

The consequences of chronic sleep deprivation stretch far beyond mere daytime grogginess. Sleep is the biological bedrock of human health—the time when the body regulates hormones, repairs damaged tissues, fortifies the immune system, and protects cardiovascular and mental health.


When heat steals that recovery time, the physical toll is profound:


Weakened Immunity & Slower Healing: Without sufficient sleep, cell regeneration slows down, meaning people take significantly longer to recover from illnesses.


Chronic Health Risks: Long-term sleep deprivation is directly linked to hypertension, diabetes, depression, and cardiovascular strain.


Cognitive and Developmental Impairment: In children, chronic heat-driven sleep loss can impair brain development, learning capacity, concentration, and memory.


Workplace Dangers: Fatigued workers suffer from reduced productivity, impaired decision-making, and a heightened risk of workplace accidents.


For everyday citizens, the struggle is immediate and exhausting. In densely populated Quezon City, vendor Riza Torres spends her nights fanning her young children through stifling humidity, fighting a losing battle against the heat with a small clip fan.


"Ang hirap talaga lalo na pag may maliit kang anak," Torres shares. "Kahit anong paligo mo sa kanila, maiinitan pa rin. Kaya magtitiis akong mag paypay... Kaya puyat. Pero gigising ka pa rin kasi no choice ka eh."


A Matter of Life and Death

The medical community warns that treating hot nights as a mere inconvenience is a dangerous mistake. Emerging research published in The Lancet Planetary Health reveals a chilling correlation: periods of hot night excess (HNE) are significantly associated with higher mortality rates, with relative mortality risks jumping by up to 50% on exceptionally warm nights compared to cooler ones.


Furthermore, the economic fallout is immense. With extreme heat already affecting nearly half of the formal workforce globally, experts warn that vulnerable informal workers and urban poor communities face an even harsher reality.


Reclaiming the Night: The Call for Climate Justice

As global temperatures continue to shatter historical records, experts stress that safeguarding public health requires a radical shift in perspective. Protecting populations from extreme heat is no longer just about daytime hydration or staying indoors when the sun is high—it requires ensuring that the night remains a place of genuine recovery.


For Greenpeace Philippines, this demands aggressive, targeted intervention from policymakers.


"I think it's also a challenge to the national government to really enact climate justice policies na hindi lang napoprotektahan lahat ng Pilipino, kundi yung mga pinaka-vulnerable sa front lines ng climate crisis ay napoprotektahan muna," Chua emphasizes.


Until systemic climate adaptation measures catch up to a warming planet, millions will continue to stare at the ceiling, waiting for a breeze that refuses to blow—trapped in a restless future where the night offers no relief.
