In 2023 alone, an additional 2.7 million people across 26 SIDS—nearly 5% of their total combined population—were pushed into moderate or severe food insecurity. The culprit? A relentless increase in the frequency of heatwaves and droughts that decimated local food systems.  

"The report makes it very clear, climate change is affecting health, food security, labour force, and the economies of SIDS more than in other parts of the world," explains CMCC researcher and co-author Shouro Dasgupta.  

The Economic Chokehold

The damage extends far beyond the dinner table. Because many SIDS are heavily dependent on food imports, they are uniquely vulnerable to both international trade shocks and the local infrastructure damage caused by climate catastrophes. The data paints a bleak picture:  

Labor Loss: In 2024, SIDS saw a 1.27% loss in GDP due to reduced labor capacity, significantly worse than the global average of 0.99%.  

Mortality Costs: Since the early 2000s, the cost of heat-related mortality in these nations has skyrocketed by a staggering 432%—the steepest increase of any country group globally.  

The Food Connection: Increased heatwave days were linked to a 5.74% rise in food insecurity in 2023, while drought frequency was responsible for a 3.53% increase.  

A Call for Accountability

The report acts as a powerful evidence base, highlighting the profound inequality inherent in the climate crisis. As these nations struggle to feed their people and protect their economies, the findings suggest that the global target of limiting warming to 1.5
