The Spark of Change: Bangladesh Adjusts Electricity Tariffs in Push for Fiscal Sustainability

DHAKA, June 3, 2026 — In a move that signals a decisive shift toward fiscal restructuring, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has announced a significant upward adjustment in electricity prices, effective immediately for the June billing cycle.

The decision, confirmed by BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed during a press briefing today, marks a 16.68% increase at the retail level and a 19.85% hike for wholesale consumers. As the nation grapples with the complexities of modern energy demands and rising generation costs, this policy adjustment serves as a critical—if challenging—step toward balancing the country's national budget.

At a Glance: The New Tariff Landscape

The adjustment reflects the administration's resolve to reduce the colossal subsidy burden on the national exchequer. Under the new directive, consumers across the board will see changes in their monthly power expenditure:

Level Previous Price (per unit) New Price (per unit)

Wholesale Tk 7.00 Tk 8.39

Retail Tk 9.11 Tk 10.63

Average Retail Increase: Tk 1.52 per unit.

Transmission Charges: Increased by 23.96%.

Subsidy Outlook: Despite these hikes, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is still projected to require an annual subsidy of approximately Tk 41,000 crore to bridge the gap between generation costs and revenue.

A Strategic Pivot

The necessity for this price correction was underscored by the stark reality of the energy sector’s financial health. With an estimated generation cost of Tk 12.91 per unit for the 2026-27 fiscal year, the previous tariff structure had become increasingly unsustainable.

"It was done quickly, keeping the budget in mind," BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed noted, addressing the urgency of the decision. By reducing the reliance on direct government subsidies, the state aims to redirect precious resources toward other vital sectors of the national economy.

The decision follows an intensive two-day public hearing held in late May, where power distribution companies—including the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) and the Rural Electrification Board (BREB)—presented their cases for financial adjustment. While initial proposals varied, the final regulatory order seeks a middle ground to ensure that the power sector remains operational without placing an overwhelming strain on the national deficit.

The Road Ahead

While the price hike is a necessary component of the government's broader economic reform agenda, it arrives at a time of global economic sensitivity. As the administration works to fulfill its election pledges and maintain fiscal stability, the challenge remains to balance the demands of economic sustainability with the needs of the 170 million citizens who rely on consistent, affordable power.

For now, the focus shifts to how these changes will ripple through the industrial and household sectors. As June bills arrive, all eyes will be on how effectively these reforms can stabilize the power sector and pave the way for a more resilient, self-sufficient energy future for Bangladesh.

Quick Context: This announcement comes amidst a busy political week in Dhaka, headlined by the nation's pride in the election of Khalilur Rahman as the UNGA President, and ongoing government efforts to align national policies with long-term economic promises.
