SINGAPORE — Thirty years of written revolutions, whispered verses, and cross-cultural collisions have built a towering literary titan in the heart of Southeast Asia. Now, as the Singapore Writers Festival (SWF) looks toward its monumental milestone, a familiar and formidable captain is stepping back onto the bridge.
The Arts House Group (AHG) has officially announced the appointment of acclaimed writer, poet, curator, and cultural luminary Yeow Kai Chai as Festival Director for SWF 2027. His return marks a historic homecoming for a festival that has grown from a national showcase into a vibrant, multilingual powerhouse presenting over 200 annual programmes and summoning the finest literary minds from across the globe.
A Storied Legacy Meets a Bold Future
For the literary community, Yeow’s name carries immense weight and deep institutional memory. Having previously helmed four consecutive editions of the festival from 2015 to 2018—including the milestone 20th anniversary—Yeow is no stranger to the delicate choreography required to balance high art with accessible public engagement.
During his previous tenure, Yeow shattered the traditional boundaries of the page, transforming literature into a living, breathing multi-disciplinary spectacle. He forged fearless intersections between poetry and music, theatre, visual arts, dance, and film, championing Singapore’s rich multilingual and multicultural tapestry. Under his watch, the festival became a dynamic public square where ideas collided, barriers dissolved, and new generations of readers found their voice.
"Returning to SWF feels both familiar and exciting," Yeow shared, reflecting on his appointment. "In my roles as attendee, participant, and organiser over the decades, I am glad to see how much the Festival has grown, and how it continues to spark unexpected conversations across languages, generations, and art forms. As we mark its 30th edition, I hope to honour everything the Festival has achieved while creating space for new voices and new ways of experiencing literature."

The baton will be passed to Yeow following the conclusion of current Festival Director Yong Shu Hoong’s final run in 2026. Expressing his full confidence in his successor, Yong noted, "As I prepare for my final edition as Festival Director in 2026, I am heartened to see the Festival's 30th edition entrusted to Kai Chai, whose longstanding connection with SWF and deep understanding of Singapore's literary landscape make him well positioned to lead this milestone edition."

The landmark 30th edition will not only look back at three decades of cultural triumph; it will also lay the cornerstone for the future.
Beginning in 2027, the National Arts Council (NAC) will launch a pioneering Festival Leadership Development Programme. Designed to future-proof Singapore’s thriving literary ecosystem, the initiative will equip the next generation of cultural architects with the vital networks, strategic knowledge, and curatorial expertise required to steward flagship events like SWF.
Mrs. Elaine Ng, Chief Executive Officer of the NAC, emphasized the dual milestone: “The 30th edition of the Singapore Writers Festival will be a milestone for Singapore’s flagship literary festival. Kai Chai brings the experience and vision to build on the Festival’s rich legacy while keeping it fresh and relevant for new audiences. The new Festival Leadership Development Programme will nurture future literary festival directors and support a vibrant literary scene in the years ahead.”
