When the Repairman Leaves Behind a Broken Fan and Missing Pieces: A Cautionary Tale of Urban Scam Artists

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Trust is a fragile currency in our neighborhoods. We open our gates, invite strangers into our homes under the guise of an honest day's labor, and expect professional courtesy in return. But for one resident, a routine household service request quickly transformed into a frustrating encounter with predatory opportunism—leaving behind a dismantled appliance, missing internal components, and a stark reminder to be vigilant against doorstep scams.

The Promise of Convenience

It started like any other ordinary day. A man and a woman riding a motorcycle arrived offering on-the-spot home appliance repairs, specifically targeting electric fans. With the sweltering heat making a functional fan an absolute necessity, the homeowners decided to give them a try.

The modus operandi seemed straightforward enough at first glance. The male fixer immediately set to work, methodically stripping down the electric fan into its individual components—motor housing, blades, cage, and internal wiring—before attempting to reassemble it.

However, the trouble began the moment the appliance was powered back on.

Instead of the steady, cooling hum of a working motor, the fan roared to life with a harsh, grating noise. Sensing something was severely wrong, the repairman dismantled the device a second time. His diagnosis? A missing replacement part was required to fix the issue properly, and he claimed he did not have it on hand.

A Suspicious Demand and a Sudden Departure

Reasoning prevailed on the homeowner's end: “Just come back when you have the complete parts to finish the job, and we will pay you then.”

That is when the situation took a sharp, alarming turn.

The repair team flatly refused the logical proposal. Instead, they aggressively demanded full payment upfront, promising they would return at an unspecified later date to fix it. Naturally, the homeowner stood their ground, refusing to pay for a broken, ear-splitting appliance that remained entirely unusable.

Furious that their demands were rejected, the duo abruptly packed up their tools, hopped onto their motorcycle, and sped away into the distance, leaving absolute chaos in their wake.

Discovered: Stripped and Plundered

It was only after the dust settled and the homeowners inspected the wreckage left behind that the true nature of the visit became chillingly clear.

When the family attempted to piece together the scattered components themselves, they discovered a disturbing reality: critical internal parts were missing. The visit had nothing to do with repair work; it was a calculated stripping operation. The motorcycle-riding duo had essentially used the teardown as a cover to harvest working spare parts from the victim's appliance, leaving behind a crippled shell.

Because of the suddenness of their departure and the speed of their getaway, the victims were unable to capture a clear photo of the suspects or their vehicle. However, distinct descriptions were noted to warn the community:

The Woman: Stocky build, wearing a red shirt. She acted as the vocal counterpart during the transaction.

The Man: Slender build, wearing a black shirt. He performed the dismantling of the appliance.

The Vehicle: A motorcycle (believed to be dark or black in color), used for a swift getaway.

A Community Warning

An appeal has since been raised to local security and guards to monitor for the suspects should they attempt to re-enter the residential area or target other unsuspecting households.

Incidents like this serve as a sharp cautionary tale for every household: never let itinerant repair workers completely disassemble your appliances out of your sight, and always verify their credentials before handing over trust—and your belongings—to strangers at your doorstep.
