A Tide of Change: 7,500 Volunteers Unite for a Waste-Free Future

The battle for our oceans is not fought in the deep blue alone; it is fought on the very shores where our communities meet the sea. This World Oceans Day 2026, a massive wave of humanity rose to meet that challenge. Under the banner of the SM Green Movement, an inspiring force of 7,500 SM employees, tenants, partners, and dedicated volunteers mobilized across the nation to reclaim our coastlines from the grip of waste.

A Shared Mission: "Waste-Free Starts With Us"

With the resolute theme, “Empowering Communities for an SM Waste-Free Future,” the initiative served as a powerful reminder that ocean protection is not a distant goal, but a daily, collective responsibility.

The scale of the impact was immense: 19,000 kilograms of trash were successfully diverted from our marine ecosystems. This monumental effort saw participation from SM By the Bay and nine other SM Supermalls strategically located near critical coastal and waterway areas.

More Than Just a Cleanup

The day was not merely about removal; it was about transformation. The “All For You. All For Our Oceans.” initiative acted as a catalyst for environmental education. Beyond clearing debris, participants engaged in:

Waste Segregation Demonstrations: Practical lessons on sorting waste to reduce landfill impact.

Educational “Trash Talks”: Turning the act of cleaning into a deeper understanding of how to prevent waste from entering waterways in the first place.

Community Engagement: Uniting diverse groups, including students, youth organizations, cycling clubs, dive communities, and local advocates, to foster a culture of shared responsibility.

A Call to Everyday Responsibility

“Protecting our oceans begins with communities choosing to act together,” shared Engr. Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and SM Cares Program Director for Environment.

She emphasized that the true victory lies in the ripple effect of these actions. “Through the SM Green Movement, we hope to inspire everyday responsibility—because for every volunteer who shows up, every piece of waste removed, and every habit changed, our waste-free future is more within reach”.

A Lasting Commitment

Coastal cleanups are a cornerstone of SM Cares’ mission to extend sustainability far beyond the walls of their malls. As part of a comprehensive 2026 calendar that includes World Water Day, the International Coastal Cleanup, and National Environment Awareness Month, these efforts are woven into the fabric of SM’s dedication to the environment.

By empowering local communities to protect marine life and manage waste responsibly today, SM Cares is laying the groundwork for a healthier, more vibrant environment for the generations of tomorrow.
