The Crucible of Climate: How Extreme Weather is Crushing Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Farming Heartlands

As the mercury climbs toward a brutal 46 degrees Celsius across the valleys and plains of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), a quiet, high-stakes battle for survival is being fought inside rural barns and fields. For small-scale livestock farmers, the scorching summer afternoons are no longer just a seasonal nuisance—they are an existential crisis.


On the Frontlines of Extreme Heat

In the Khyber district’s Bara region, livestock farmer Muhammad Shafiq Khan spends his afternoons waging war against thermal stress. Valued at up to Rs800,000 each, his prize cows require round-the-clock intervention. Water sprinklers hiss continuously, drinking tubs are frantically refreshed, and green fodder is supplemented with glucose just to keep the animals alive.

The financial hemorrhage is relentless. Skyrocketing electricity bills for cooling systems, inflated water requirements, and mounting medicine expenses are steadily eroding profit margins.


The Fatal Dilemma of Foreign Breeds

In pursuit of commercial viability, many farmers have turned away from resilient local breeds in favor of high-yield international imports like Holstein Friesians and Jersey cows. While these foreign breeds promise greater milk output, they are profoundly ill-suited for Pakistan's punishing climate.


The consequences can be catastrophic. Thirty-year-old Atif Khan learned this the hard way after investing heavily in a government-backed livestock scheme. Weeks before giving birth, three of his high-value pregnant cows succumbed to heat-induced illnesses.


"These foreign breeds are not suited to our climate," Atif explains. "During extreme heat, instead of eating 20 kilograms of feed, they consume around 10 kilograms. Their milk production is reduced by half, and they become physically weak." Even after rebuilding his enterprise with a Rs7 million farm, the constant sword of climate volatility hangs overhead.


A Pillar Under Pressure

The stakes extend far beyond individual farms. According to the Pakistan Economic Survey, livestock remains the largest sub-sector of agriculture, accounting for 14.6% of the national GDP and supporting more than eight million rural families, who derive up to 40% of their income from animals.


In KP, where roughly 70% of the rural population depends on livestock, rising temperatures have triggered a domino effect of agricultural distress:


Crashing Yields: Heat stress routinely slashes milk production by 10% to 30%.


Fodder Shortages: Changing rainfall patterns and water scarcity have caused a 4.5% decline in green fodder availability.


Reproductive Failure: Extreme heat spikes pregnancy loss rates and calf mortality across districts like Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan.


A Rising Tide of Disease

Climate change has also unleashed biological threats. According to the KP Livestock Department, scorching summers and rising humidity create a breeding paradise for flies, mosquitoes, and ticks, driving a surge in vector-borne and infectious illnesses.


Research centers in the province report handling up to 80 cases daily during the summer, a massive fourfold increase compared to winter averages. Diseases such as lumpy skin disease, foot-and-mouth disease, tick-borne infections, and liver flukes are running rampant.


For farmers in remote regions like Orakzai, limited veterinary infrastructure turns treatable illnesses into financial ruins. Sher Ali Khan watched helplessly as a prized cow worth Rs600,000 died of severe liver damage, despite spending over Rs80,000 on futile medical treatments.


Adapting or Perishing

While the damage caused by climatic shifts cannot be completely reversed, agricultural experts from the FAO and local research bodies emphasize that survival depends on proactive, climate-smart management:


Environmental Controls: Transitioning to heavily shaded, well-ventilated sheds equipped with cooling fans and water sprinklers.


Nutritional Adjustments: Administering electrolytes, balanced mineral feeds, and scheduling feeding times during cooler dawn and dusk hours.


Disease Defense: Strengthening local vaccination campaigns and implementing aggressive parasite and tick-control measures.


Resilience Breeding: Balancing commercial goals with the preservation of heat-tolerant native breeds like Achai, Sahiwal, and Red Sindhi.


As temperatures continue an unforgiving upward trajectory, the future of KP's rural economy rests entirely on how rapidly its farming communities can adapt to a profoundly altered world.
