Every June and July, a familiar calculus settles over Malaysia's business hubs. The sky thickens, the Air Pollutant Index (API) creeps upward, and corporate boardrooms make adjustments. Outdoor meetings are postponed, construction slows, and a few school days vanish into the haze. Then, life resumes. The smoke is unpleasant, yes, but above all, it is expected.
That expectation is the quiet catastrophe of our time.
Across three decades of seasonal smoke rolling in from Sumatra and Kalimantan, we have not built resilience. We have built normalisation. We have reclassified a public health emergency as a management inconvenience. And right now, inside Malaysian organizations, that exact same cognitive surrender—accepting what should be utterly refused—is playing out in a far more insidious arena: the uncritical adoption of artificial intelligence.
The Calculus of Complacency
Consider the price tag of our collective shrug. Air pollution drains Malaysia of approximately US$73 billion (RM298.6 billion) annually in combined health and productivity losses—roughly 15% of per capita GDP. Despite minor improvements, fine-particle air pollution remains multiples above World Health Organization guidelines, and long-range forecasts warn of escalating fires as El Niño conditions return.
For over twenty years, regional agreements have been signed, ministerial meetings convened, and thick stacks of documentation produced. The system generates paperwork. It has not, however, managed to produce clean air.
Sociologist Diane Vaughan coined the phrase "normalisation of deviance" to describe the psychological drift at NASA in the years preceding the Challenger disaster: warning signs were observed, rationalized away, and ultimately redesignated as acceptable background noise. Cybersecurity researchers and organizational psychologists now recognize the exact same pathology at play in our rush toward AI. When a society stops reacting to hazardous API readings with righteous urgency, it has not adapted. It has lowered the bar of survival.
Agency Decay: The Invisible Parallel
If the normalisation of environmental toxicity creeps in through the lungs, AI-driven agency decay seeps in through convenience.
Across financial services, logistics, and professional spaces, AI tools are swiftly embedding themselves into foundational workflows. Decisions regarding credit scoring, hiring pipelines, procurement shortlists, and customer triage are routinely delegated to black-box systems that operators cannot audit, explain, or truly question.
This handover does not happen through a hostile corporate takeover. It happens incrementally, one frictionless click at a time.
Frequent, uncritical AI reliance has been directly linked to declining critical thinking scores—hitting younger users hardest. When tools do the heavy lifting, the mental muscle required for sound, innovative decision-making atrophies.
A procurement manager signs off on an AI-generated vendor list without testing for latent bias.
A bank officer accepts an automated credit score without inspecting the underlying variables.
A factory supervisor overrides his own gut instinct on a safety protocol because the dashboard monitor flashes reassuring green.
Each individual incident feels harmlessly small. The aggregate is an organization that has outsourced its core judgment without realizing it—leaving leadership with a dangerously hollowed-out capacity to respond when true crisis strikes. Just as we learned to breathe through the smoke, we are learning to abdicate thought to the algorithm.
The Performance Paradox
Both crises—transboundary haze and cognitive offloading—share a singular, deceptive root: the repeated absence of immediate catastrophe is mistaken for absolute safety.
The smoke did not shut down the office today. The AI did not trigger a catastrophic failure this quarter. Each non-event quietly shifts the psychological threshold, turning a glaring warning sign into corporate wallpaper.
The danger is a cruel performance paradox. AI boosts immediate task output while eroding the deep human reasoning that organizations desperately need during periods of novel stress or disruption. A company can look operationally sharp on a sunny Tuesday and be fundamentally hollowed out by Wednesday. Climate volatility and cognitive dependency are no longer background footnotes; they are direct threats to fiscal and operational survival.
The Way Forward: The HAZE Framework
If Malaysian businesses are to break free from this twin cycle of environmental and cognitive normalisation, leadership must transition from passive management to active resistance. The solution demands a return to rigor, encapsulated in a practical imperative:
H — Hold the line on human judgement.
For every significant AI-assisted decision involving credit, hiring, safety, or procurement, a human must retain ultimate authority, override capability, and direct accountability. Efficiency gains that completely sever humans from the decision chain must be firmly rejected.
A — Audit what you have normalised.
Catalog the core AI tools embedded in your daily operations. Ask the hard questions: When were these outputs last tested for bias? Have these systems quietly replaced the original human purpose they were meant to serve? Run the audit before the crisis forces your hand.
Z — Zero tolerance for invisible costs.
Haze damage and agency decay share a trait: they are routinely omitted from traditional balance sheets until the accumulated toll is irreversible. Elevate both environmental exposure and uncritical algorithmic dependence from hidden footnotes to formal line items on your corporate risk register.
E — Expect more from your systems, not less from your people.
The true promise of technology is to elevate human capacity, not substitute it. Design every workflow so that employees using AI are stretched to think more deeply, not relieved of the burden of thought. Demand accountability that translates into real-world outcomes, not just empty corporate communiqués.
Breaking the Spell
Normalisation is never a neutral act. Every single time a society learns to accept what it once rightly deemed unacceptable, it surrenders a piece of its future. Malaysia possesses the intellectual capital, the frameworks, and the resilience to demand higher standards—both in the air we breathe and in the algorithms that guide our decisions.
The vital starting point is deceptively simple: Stop calling it normal.
