Blueprint for Belonging: How SM Group's Universal Design Earns 23 Landmark Distinctions

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Accessibility is too often treated as an afterthought—a ramp bolted onto an existing staircase, a narrow elevator squeezed into a tight corner. But what happens when accessibility is woven directly into the foundational blueprints of a commercial empire? The SM Group is redefining that standard, proving that universal design and deep empathy can transform retail spaces into true sanctuaries of equality.

Through the dedicated efforts of SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, this unwavering commitment recently culminated in 23 prestigious industry distinctions at the 2026 Apolinario Mabini Awards. Presented by the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled Inc. (PFRD), these accolades celebrate institutions that champion the welfare and dignity of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

A Visionary Commitment to Inclusion

True inclusivity requires more than physical architecture; it demands a cultural shift in how spaces operate and how people are trained to serve. SM Cares oversees disability-friendly facilities nationwide, pairing structural planning with rigorous manpower training aligned with industry standards.

"Every single person entering and engaging in the spaces built by SM deserves to feel welcomed and accommodated," shares Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Operations and Program Director for Disability Affairs, SM Cares.

This philosophy turns standard shopping malls and offices into dynamic "Malls for All," where every guest can navigate freely while having access to immediate support when challenges arise.

Key Highlights of Recognition

The accolades span across SM's vast network of real estate, retail spaces, and corporate offices, showcasing a comprehensive, group-wide dedication to accessibility:

  • 12 Citations for SM Supermalls: SM’s extensive real estate network for retail earned a dozen major recognitions, with SM Store, SM Commercial Properties Group, and SM Supermarket capturing ten awards in the Disability Friendly Establishment category.

  • Silver and Bronze Honors: SM City Roxas proudly received a silver citation, while properties like SM Center Angono, SM City Bacolod North Block Extension, and E-Com Three secured bronze recognitions.

  • Advocate for Equity Award: SM Cares was honored by the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) for its sustained leadership, advocacy, and consistent efforts in driving disability inclusion forward across the Philippines.

  • Bridging Accessibility Gaps: Special awards celebrated properties that achieved substantial compliance with Batas Pambansa Blg. 344 and proactively executed improvements to eliminate accessibility barriers.

Building a Legacy Beyond Business

Beyond physical infrastructure like ramps, priority lanes, and sensory labs, SM properties consistently serve as vibrant community hubs. By opening their doors nationwide for disability-related events, emergency preparedness forums, and inclusive community programs, SM Cares fosters visibility, engagement, and equal opportunity.

By treating accessibility not as a compliance checklist, but as a core corporate purpose, the SM Group continues to set a benchmark for what modern commercial spaces can—and should—achieve for society.

What initiatives do you think other commercial developers should adopt to make public spaces truly inclusive for everyone?
