Bridging the Gap: Inside the Ateneo RCWI Open House

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Great ideas rarely thrive in isolation. Across laboratories, art studios, and classrooms, scholars and creatives constantly dream up innovations that could change society—yet many struggle to navigate the complex web of funding, publishing, and intellectual property required to bring those visions to life.

To tear down these invisible walls, the Ateneo de Manila University Office of the Assistant Vice President for Research, Creative Work, and Innovation (OAVP RCWI) recently hosted the RCWI Open House on 12 August 2026 at Faber Hall 101 and the Rizal Mini-Theater. The all-day event served as a high-stakes crossroads for researchers, artists, students, and project teams seeking to transform abstract concepts into tangible societal impact.

A One-Stop Ecosystem for Innovators

Navigating university bureaucracy can feel like an uphill battle. The Open House fundamentally shifted that dynamic by gathering the RCWI’s diverse sub-offices under one roof. Attendees gained direct access to:

  • The Ateneo de Manila University Press: Providing direct pathways for manuscripts to reach broader public audiences.

  • The Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO): Safeguarding breakthrough inventions and creative assets.

  • The University Research Integrity Office (URIO): Ensuring ethical standards and compliance across all projects.

Instead of bouncing between scattered departments, community members engaged in direct consultations with specialists. They tackled daunting hurdles head-on, from spotting predatory journals and securing research ethics approvals to applying for publication awards and conference presentation grants.

Interactive Engagement and Real-World Impact

The event ditched dry administrative briefings in favor of immersive, hands-on experiences. At the Journals Booth, visitors traced a manuscript's turbulent journey from a raw draft to a published piece, testing their academic publishing knowledge while exploring strategies to expand their readership.

Meanwhile, participants contributed to the Research Impact Tree—an interactive booth where students and faculty pinned up pressing issues they want to solve, ranging from community welfare to technological ethics.

Ultimately, the RCWI Open House did more than just hand out pamphlets. By connecting creators with vital support systems, the event drove home a powerful message: Ateneo-generated knowledge is designed not to gather dust in academic journals, but to break out into the world and uplift the communities that need it most.
