Media professionals and communicators from diverse faith backgrounds stepped away from the front lines of crisis to stand together in a powerful display of unity. The Global Prayer Assembly for Peace (GPAP) transformed a routine weekly gathering into a dramatic, high-stakes plea for healing, human rights, and responsible storytelling.
Voices from the Front Lines
Opening the assembly, Aida Gonzales, Program Host of DZME Radyo TV and COMPASS Media, delivered a sobering reminder of the media's heavy burden.
"As members of the media, we have a crucial role in times of conflict and crisis," Gonzales declared. "Often, journalists and media workers are among the first to witness and report what is happening on the ground — wars, violence, displacement, discrimination, and other situations that affect communities."
Rather than simply chronicling human suffering, Gonzales challenged her peers to look deeper, emphasizing that media can and must evolve into a "bridge for peace through responsible storytelling."
A Symphony of Interfaith Solidarity
The assembly transcended religious boundaries, bringing together distinct voices to invoke divine guidance for a troubled world:
Muslim Community Perspective: Tu Alfonso, Chairman of Bangsamoro Multimedia Network, Inc., prayed ardently for the protection of media workers, asking that their reporting actively foster understanding, reconciliation, and unity. He further extended his prayers to communities battered by typhoons and those on the front lines of rescue efforts, pleading: "Oh Allah, bring peace where there is conflict, truth where there is confusion, justice where there is injustice and compassion where there is suffering."
Roman Catholic Community Perspective: Martin Racza of the University of the Philippines Manila and the Knights of Columbus echoed the call for journalist safety, urging media workers to prioritize truth over falsehoods and to "propagate the seeds of peace instead of fanning the flames of war."
Christian and Protestant Perspective: Pastor Manny Tabingo, Program Host of Beyond Sundays at BIG 101.5 FM, helped anchor the interfaith spiritual momentum, reinforcing the collective dedication to truth and harmony.
A Global Plea for Justice
Beyond local conflicts and natural disasters, the assembly turned its gaze toward international human rights concerns. An urgent appeal was raised for the health, well-being, and safe release of 95-year-old Chairman Lee Man-hee, who remains detained in South Korea while awaiting trial.
This interfaith appeal directly aligned with urgent concerns voiced during an international press conference at the Seoul Foreign Correspondents’ Club. Prominent human rights and religious freedom organizations—including Human Rights Without Frontiers, CAP Liberté de Conscience, the Forum for Religious Freedom Europe, the Center for Studies on New Religions, and Bitter Winter—have rallied to demand rigorous adherence to due process, proportionality, and humanitarian respect for elderly religious leaders and minorities.
